چکیده
We investigated the effects of large-scale orography on the tropical coupled atmosphere-ocean system over the Indian and Pacific Oceans in northern summer, using the Meteorological Research Institute coupled atmosphere-ocean General Circulation Model (GCM). Six different experiments were conducted with mountain heights of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, and 0% of the standard mountain height. The results show that a pool of warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs) appears in the western Pacific as orography increases, although SST in the tropical Pacific decreases as a whole. In addition, easterly winds at low levels over the equatorial Pacific strengthen as mountains rise. The enhanced easterlies alter surface heat flux and ocean dynamics, changing the water temperature field in the upper Pacific Ocean. Water temperatures between the surface and 300 m in the western Pacific increase as upwelling is suppressed and the thermocline deepens. Water temperatures in the eastern Pacific decrease and the thermocline rises. Therefore, the east-west gradient of water temperature in the Pacific is enhanced for cases with mountain heights of 80% and 100% of the standard mountain height. In the equatorial Indian Ocean, the east-west gradient of ocean heat content weakens as mountain heights increase, in connection with the evolution of the Asian summer monsoon. An increase in diabatic heating over South Asia as mountain heights increase causes sea level pressure (SLP) to decline over the Indian Ocean, and enhances upper atmospheric divergence over the eastern hemisphere. Consequently, the east-west circulation over the Indian and Pacific Oceans strengthens as mountains become taller. The east-west circulation may also be enhanced by changes in convective activity associated with SST changes. The Discursive Construction of “Native” and “Non-Native” Speaker English Teacher Identities in Japan: A Linguistic Ethnographic Investigation
Recent poststructuralist theories of identity posit identities as being discursively constructed in interactions with society, institutions, and individuals. This study used a Linguistic Ethnographic framework to investigate the discursive identity construction of two English teachers, one ‘non-native’ English speaker, and one ‘native’ English speaker, teaching English in a tertiary institution...

Objective(s): Nuclear medicine technologists in Japan often perform additional single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with or without computed tomography (CT) after whole-body imaging for bone scintigraphy. In this study, we wanted to identify the bone scanning protocols used in Japan, together with the current clinical practices. Methods:...
متن کاملSocial Policy in Japan and Sweden; A Proper Pattern for Iranian Elderlies
Objectives: In developed countries, aging of population is not a new phenomenon. However, in under development countries, such as Iran, it is necessary to think about the welfare of elderlies from now on. Due to the degradation of physical and mental abilities of elderlies, they are threatening by crucial problems. Therefore, to be safe and secure, elderlies must be provided by special supports...

This article compares the provision of long-term care (LTC) in Japan and Spain, two countries with similar demographic structures but which address the provision of LTCs in very different ways. Both countries provide universal LTC. However, Japan has developed a generous benefit package of formal services for dependents to alleviate the care burden on the family, but provides no cash benefits. ...
متن کاملDefining and Acting on Global Health: The Case of Japan and the Refugee Crisis
What counts as global health? There has been limited discourse to date on the ways in which country-level contexts may shape positioning in global health agendas. By reviewing Japan’s response to the refugee crisis, we demonstrate a clash between rhetoric and action on global responsibility, and suggest that cultural and historical factors may be related to the ways of perceiving and acting upo...
